Event Description

Master Beekeeper, Marlin Athearn has been in the beekeeping business for over 15 years in New Smyrna Beach. What started out as a fun hobby has turned into something much more.

Their hive colonies are located at their home in Corbin Park and in several out yards at the north and west side of New Smyrna Beach.

Marlin studied under the University of Florida Honeybee Extension Lab program and has earned the title of Master Beekeeper in that program. He is currently the Vice President of The Beekeepers of Volusia County.

Their bees’ products have been judged in Welsh Honey Shows and earned the level of first place and best of show placement. Not only for their honey products but also their wax products.

Marlin brings the story of the honeybees to the public for area schools, clubs, and organizations, to help people understand honeybee biology, how they make honey and what they need from us to survive on this continent. Some of the presentation selections include:

“Commercial Beekeepers and Their Sweet Life”

“Women & Bees and Their Hold On Society”

“Bees & Medicine – How’s Curing How?”

And “A Taste Of Honey – How Do They Do It?”

Marlin will be presenting, “How to Be A Hive Detective”, This is a series that discusses what the hive is telling you when you open it up. He explains the clues inside the colony that may appear faint but become obvious to the trained eye.
