Jon Elmquist is our Guest Speaker and will be talking about whether there's a conflict between Honey Bees and Wild Bees.
Jon Elmquist is an Insect Conservation Technician in Jaret Daniels’ lab at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, where he supports research efforts to help conserve imperiled butterflies and bees. He earned his master’s degree in entomology at Penn State studying risk to pollinators from neonicotinoid insecticides applied to trees for management of the spotted lanternfly. Jon’s previously worked as a research technician at the University of Florida, managing apiaries, assisting projects on honey bee husbandry and pollinator ecology, and educating others about bees through extension. His professional interest with pollinator conservation and education began when he was a cast member at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where he was given opportunities to monitor local butterfly populations and engage park guests about pollinators and the importance of conserving them. Outside of his work, Jon likes to spend time with family and friends, write metal music, learn philosophy, and take walks outside for “bee-watching”.
