New to Beekeeping? Start Here is a beginner-friendly session designed to help new and early-stage beekeepers build confidence and avoid common early mistakes. This presentation brings together two important sides of getting started: understanding your responsibilities as a beekeeper and choosing the right equipment for your hive and goals.

Angie Thul will cover regulatory compliance and beekeeper responsibilities, helping new beekeepers understand what is required, what is recommended, and how to stay on the right side of local and state regulations. Lee Wisnioski will walk through equipment recommendations for beginner to intermediate beekeepers, focusing on what equipment is worth investing in, what can wait, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls that lead to early failure.

Whether you are brand new and still planning your first hive, or you have some experience and are wondering what comes next, this session will provide practical guidance, clear options, and real-world insight to help you move forward with confidence.

Angie Thul

Angie Thul began her beekeeping journey after attending Palm Beach County Beekeepers Association's fun meeting in 2015 and received her first honey bee colony on February 5, 2016. She recently marked ten years as a beekeeper.

In February 2023, Angie began serving as an Apiary Inspector for District 09. She continues to enjoy hands-on time in the apiary while managing her own hives and expanding her yard with Florida native plants and trees to “feed the bees.” Angie brings both practical beekeeping experience and regulatory knowledge to help beekeepers understand their responsibilities and set their apiaries up for success.

Lee Wisnioski

Lee Wisnioski is an experienced beekeeper and a longtime member of the Palm Beach County Beekeepers Association. He has previously served as President of PBCBA and currently serves as Treasurer, remaining actively involved in supporting and mentoring beekeepers at all levels.

Lee focuses on equipment selection and hive planning for beginner to intermediate beekeepers, helping new beekeepers understand where to invest their hard-earned money, what equipment works best in practice, and how to avoid common early mistakes. He also helps more experienced beekeepers explore options for expanding and managing a growing apiary.
