About the Speaker:
Jeff Horchoff, affectionately known as “Mr. Ed,” is a veteran beekeeper and educator whose journey with bees began in 1978. His passion for apiculture found a spiritual dimension when he became the sole beekeeper for the Benedictine monks at Saint Joseph Abbey in Southeast Louisiana. There, he established the Abbey’s beekeeping initiative, known as ABBEE Honey, and integrated monastic principles into his beekeeping practices.
In 2016, a devastating flood destroyed the Abbey’s 30 hives. Undeterred, Jeff rebuilt the apiary from scratch, expanding it to over 200 hives by 2020 before scaling back to a sustainable 150 colonies. His resilience and dedication have been instrumental in revitalizing the Abbey’s beekeeping program.
Beyond the Abbey, Jeff shares his extensive knowledge through his YouTube channel, “Jeff Horchoff Bees,” where he documents hive removals, swarm captures, and offers practical beekeeping advice. His engaging storytelling and deep understanding of bee behavior have made him a respected figure in the beekeeping community.
Jeff’s presentations often explore the intersection of spirituality and beekeeping, emphasizing the communal and purposeful nature of bee colonies. He draws parallels between the structured life of a beehive and monastic living, offering unique insights into the harmony of nature and faith.
